Propel Wisconsin Innovation

For Wisconsin Entrepreneurs By Wisconsin Entrepreneurs

There has been a lot of talk recently about a startup visa, allowing for immigration based on the requirement that the new immigrant is starting a company and creating jobs here in the US. This is typically in the context of those in angel- and venture-backed companies. For more information see http://startupvisa.com/ and the list of blog posts linked from that site.

I think it's a compelling idea and one that is likely to spur economic development. The number of immigrants that are suggested as being let into the states are relatively low, but the potential impact could be large.

Some food for thought: does this increase competition in the already difficult angel/VC funding market? Is it primarily good for angels and VCs? What is the effect on other startups in the US?

I tend to think it will bring increased marketplace competition vs domestic entrepreneurs (which I see as a good thing). However, I suspect it will also draw foreign investment, so should not be assumed to be anything like a zero sum game in terms of funding competition. Therefore while I suspect domestic innovators and funders will both feel competition, it seems like employment and collateral economic growth flow from that.
